The National Identification Authority (NIA) has dismissed reports suggesting that the validity period of the Ghana Card will be reduced from 10 years.
In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, the authority clarified that the Ghana Card remains valid for 10 years from the date of issuance, after which it must be renewed in line with the law.
The NIA explained that recent comments by its Executive Secretary, Wisdom Kwaku Deku, had been misinterpreted. According to the authority, Mr Deku did not announce any policy change but only indicated that future reviews could consider shorter update intervals due to technological advancements.
It emphasised that the current 10-year renewal requirement remains in force, noting that the duration was established because the card itself has a lifespan of a decade, during which a cardholder’s personal features are also expected to change.
The NIA urged the public to disregard misinformation on the matter and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a secure, reliable, and future-ready national identification system for Ghanaians.
