Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has assured that the government will ensure strict and impartial prosecution of illegal mining offenders.
Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show on September 24, the minister said all arrests are being processed under the direct oversight of the Attorney General’s Department, without any influence from political actors.
“We don’t care who you are or how politically connected you may be. Anyone arrested will be prosecuted. This time, there are no calls from anybody, no interference,” he stressed.
Buah added that the government is reviewing existing laws and guidelines to strengthen the legal framework for environmental protection and sustainable mining. He also revealed that a comprehensive review of mining and environmental laws is underway, including guidelines to empower the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and strengthen community approval processes before licences are granted.
“We are not only enforcing the law, we are reforming it. Our aim is to stop the bleeding, restore our rivers, and ensure that mining is done responsibly,” he said.
