Parliament sets up committee to investigate military brutality in Wa

Parliament has set up a Committee to investigate circumstances that led some soldiers of the 10 Mechanized Battalion to attack residents in Wa.

The team is expected in the Upper West Region soon. This message was conveyed by the Upper West Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih at a media briefing in Wa.

Meanwhile, a four-member Investigative Committee setup by the Military High Command has already begun work and is expected to present its report in five days.

Dr. Bin Salih called for calm as investigations into the bizarre incident is underway.

On July 1, scores of soldiers flooded the main streets of Wa and assaulted residents.

Unconfirmed reports say the actions of the soldiers were occasioned by the theft of a mobile phone belonging to one of them.

Some of the residents who were attacked sustained various degrees of injury with Gafaru Mahama suffering a broken leg.

The Public Relations Officer of the Regional Coordinating Council, Cletus Awuni and the Regional Director of NADMO, Ahmed Mustapha were also assaulted.

After the incident, it was reported that three persons visited the Wa Municipal Hospital for treatment while thirteen others have filed complaints with the Police in Wa.
