The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), has launched a manhunt for four individuals believed to be involved in illegal gold smuggling.

The wanted suspects have been identified as Abdul Karim, Sadique Abubakar, Muhammed Afsal Puth Puthalan, and Muhammed Nandoli Rafeeq.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, the suspects are part of a seven-member syndicate engaged in illicit gold trading.

He disclosed at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, September 16, that three members of the group have already been arrested and are currently in the custody of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

To aid the manhunt, authorities have announced a GHC1 million bounty for information leading to the arrest of each of the four suspects still at large.

“We have an arrest warrant for all of them. They are wanted by the police and the GoldBod. Anyone with credible information can report to the nearest police station or the GoldBod head office,” Mr. Gyamfi stated.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has issued a formal apology after mistakenly publishing the image of Shamlal Ahamed, Managing Director of International Operations at Malabar Gold & Diamonds, instead of one of the suspects in a major gold smuggling case, Mohammed Nandoli Rafeeq.

The Board has since retracted the incorrect image and released the correct one.
