The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into a shooting incident involving military personnel that occurred around 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Nyinahin in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
The incident led to the death of one person, identified as Akwasi Lala, also known as Kushivi, while three others sustained gunshot injuries.
According to a statement signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Regional Police Command, DSP Godwin Ahianyo, the military personnel were travelling along the Abuakwa-Bibiani highway when, upon reaching Nyinahin, they spotted a mourner wearing military camouflage while carrying a corpse to the cemetery for burial.
Initial police investigations revealed that the soldiers attempted to forcibly remove the attire, leading to a confrontation.
During the scuffle, one of the soldiers allegedly shot a mourner in the head, killing him instantly.
The confrontation escalated, and in an attempt to prevent a reprisal, the soldiers reportedly fired into the crowd, injuring three more people.
An investigation team dispatched to the scene has retrieved spent shell casings for forensic analysis.
The statement added that the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, has visited the crime scene and checked on the injured persons at the hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
The Commander assured the injured and the bereaved family of a thorough and impartial investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure justice is served.
Meanwhile, the deceased has been deposited at the Nyinahin Community Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, as part of the ongoing investigation.
