The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into the unlawful possession of weapons and ammunition after officers from the Kuntanase District Patrol Team intercepted a vehicle containing firearms on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

According to a police statement, the patrol team, while conducting routine checks along the Aputoagya–Bekwai road, spotted a white Toyota Sienta with registration number NR 289-24 suspiciously parked in a bushy area by the roadside.

Two men were reportedly standing beside the vehicle, allegedly smoking a substance suspected to be narcotics. Upon noticing the approaching officers, the suspects fled into a nearby bush and managed to escape despite a police pursuit.

A search of the abandoned vehicle led to the discovery of weapons and other items believed to have been intended for criminal activity. The retrieved items included:

  • One AK-47 assault rifle (Serial No. 29546)
  • One locally manufactured firearm
  • Two AK-47 magazines, each loaded with 30 rounds
  • Four packets of AK-47 ammunition, each containing 25 rounds
  • Seven loose rounds of ammunition
  • One pair of Wellington boots
  • One Huawei smartphone
  • Cowrie shells
  • One pair of sandals
  • A Ghana Card and a Temporary Driver’s Licence (name withheld for investigative purposes)

The vehicle has since been impounded at the Kuntanase Police Station, with the items retained as exhibits to support ongoing investigations.

In a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the police assured residents of their commitment to combating violent crime and safeguarding public safety.
