President John Mahama has arrived in Japan to participate in the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), scheduled for 20–22 August 2025 in Yokohama.

He touched down in Tokyo on Emirates flight EK 318 and was received by officials of Ghana’s Embassy in Japan and representatives of the host government. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation.

Launched in 1993, the TICAD process has become one of the most influential global platforms for African development. It is spearheaded by the Government of Japan in partnership with the United Nations, UNDP, the African Union Commission (AUC) and the World Bank. The conference promotes African ownership of its development agenda while strengthening international collaboration.

This year’s summit will bring together heads of state, government officials, business leaders and development partners to explore strategies for accelerating Africa’s economic transformation. Discussions will focus on sustainable industrialisation, investment in human capital, healthcare innovation and climate-resilient infrastructure.

President Mahama is expected to emphasise Ghana’s commitment to inclusive growth, regional integration and investment-friendly policies. He will also hold bilateral meetings with Japanese leaders, development partners and potential investors on the sidelines of the conference.

Ghana has previously benefited from TICAD initiatives in areas such as infrastructure, technical cooperation and healthcare. At TICAD 9, the country hopes to deepen trade relations with Japan and attract new investments in energy, manufacturing and agriculture.

The outcomes of TICAD 9 are expected to shape Africa-Japan cooperation for the next three years and provide renewed momentum towards the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
