President John Dramani Mahama has assured the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) of his government’s commitment to safeguarding media freedom and strengthening the welfare of journalists.
He gave the assurance when the national executives of the GJA paid a courtesy call on him at the Presidency in Accra.
Media Journey and Constitutional Gains
Recounting his journey from a trainee journalist at GBC to his role in government communications, President Mahama said Ghana has made significant strides in media liberalization under the 1992 Constitution. He stressed, however, that new challenges posed by technology and unregulated digital platforms require attention, particularly in curbing hate speech and protecting journalists from harassment.
Protection of Journalists from Harassment
President Mahama expressed concern over the harassment of media practitioners by security personnel at public events. He announced plans to create a platform for the GJA to engage security agencies to sensitize them on the role of journalists in national development.
Electoral Violence and Compensation
On electoral violence, the President disclosed that he had received investigative reports on the 2020 and 2024 election disturbances. He said the report, now with the Attorney General, outlines those affected and would guide prosecutions and compensation for victims, including journalists.
Reactivation of Media Development Fund
The President also pledged to reactivate the Media Development Fund in the 2026 budget to support capacity building and welfare initiatives for journalists. He said the fund, to be managed by a board of trustees comprising government and GJA representatives, would be transparent and sustainable.
Support for GJA Press Centre
On the GJA Press Centre, President Mahama described the lack of a land title after two decades as unfortunate and promised to liaise with the Lands Commission to secure it. He further assured government’s support, along with corporate Ghana, in developing a modern Press Centre for the Association.
Renewed Commitment to Media Freedom
President Mahama reaffirmed his resolve to restore Ghana’s pride of place as Africa’s beacon of media freedom, insisting that under his leadership, journalists will be free to operate without fear or intimidation.
