President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that his government will maintain strict fiscal discipline and prudent economic management, even as the nation approaches the 2028 election year.
Speaking at the 77th Annual New Year School and Conference at the University of Ghana in Accra on January 6, 2026, President Mahama emphasised the importance of sustaining economic stability and growth, noting that good governance must remain consistent regardless of electoral cycles.
“I can assure Ghanaians also that we will not relax the current fiscal discipline and efficient management of the economy even in the election year of 2028,” the President stressed. He noted that the administration remains committed to safeguarding the gains made over the past 12 months and ensuring that the nation’s economic foundation is strengthened for future generations.
The conference, themed “Building the Ghana We Want, Together for Sustainable Development,” brought together policymakers, academics, and experts to discuss governance, economic reforms, and strategies for national development.
President Mahama highlighted that maintaining fiscal discipline is critical not just for macroeconomic stability, but also for sustaining public confidence in government institutions. He stressed that accountability, transparency, and efficiency must guide public financial management, particularly during politically sensitive periods.
In addition to fiscal matters, President Mahama used the occasion to outline infrastructure and educational projects under his administration’s Reset Agenda, including innovative initiatives such as prefabricated construction for student hostels and other public buildings.
By underscoring fiscal prudence in an election year, the President seeks to reassure citizens and investors alike that Ghana’s economic trajectory will not be compromised by political transitions, reinforcing the country’s reputation for stable governance in a region often challenged by economic and political uncertainty.
This pledge aligns with the broader vision of 2026 as a year of “acceleration and expansion,” focusing on sustainable development, education, infrastructure, and the overall prosperity of Ghanaians.
