A research fellow at the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), Dr Derrick Kwaku Antwi, has appealed to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to take urgent steps to curb what he describes as unjustified increases in transport fares during the Christmas season.
In an open letter addressed to the AMA Chief Executive, Dr Antwi said some drivers were planning to raise fares to capitalise on increased demand, a move he warned could place additional financial pressure on residents. He noted that many families depend on public transport to travel during the festive period.
Dr Antwi also linked fare hikes to potential road safety concerns, citing data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) indicating a rise in traffic accidents during festive seasons. He argued that excessive fares could encourage unsafe driving practices as operators seek to maximise profits.
He proposed several measures for consideration, including collaboration with drivers’ unions to agree on fixed and reasonable fares, stronger enforcement and monitoring of transport regulations, the provision of alternative transport options, and public education campaigns to inform residents of their rights.
Dr Antwi said coordinated action by the AMA could help ensure a safe, affordable and stress-free festive season for residents.
