The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that government is in advanced talks with a new strategic investor to help develop and possibly take over the operation of the telecom company called AirtelTigo.

This was announced during a meeting with telecom industry leaders on Friday, May 30, 202,5, as part of effort to strengthen the state-owned telecom provider and increase competition in Ghana’s telecommunication sector.

“For the first time, I can confirm that we are negotiating with a strategic partner to support AT,” Mr. George said. “We’ve set a 60-day timeline to conclude the deal, and by the end of the third quarter, we expect improved services to be fully rolled out.”

Since the government took over AirtelTigo in 2021, the company has struggled to compete with major players like MTN and Telecel. The planned partnership is expected to bring in fresh investment and technical skills to help AT grow.
In addition, Mr. George announced that Cabinet has approved the release of new spectrum resources to major telecom providers, including MTN and Telecel. This spectrum will support better infrastructure and services.

“The regulators also informed me of requests for special licenses so that AT and Telecel, who face spectrum shortages, can use additional resources from the NGIC platform. MTN is also welcome to join,” he said.

These steps show the government’s renewed commitment to improving Ghana’s telecom sector through innovation, stronger networks, and better service for consumers.
