The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has expressed its commitment to partner with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) under the MahamaCares initiative to enhance healthcare delivery and social protection for Ghanaians.

The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Madam Obuobia Darko-Opoku, and her team met with SSNIT’s Director-General, Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, along with his deputies — Mr. Adam Sulley, in charge of Operations and Benefits, and Dr. Bernardette Naa Hoffman, in charge of Finance and Administration.

During the meeting, the Administrator, Madam Obuobia Darko-Opoku, presented key insights from Phase One of the Fund’s nationwide needs assessment tour, which highlighted the urgent need for innovative partnerships to address systemic healthcare challenges, particularly the growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory illnesses, and cardiovascular diseases.

She explained that these NCDs are increasingly affecting both the young and elderly populations, straining the national health system and impacting productivity.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, therefore, seeks to work with key institutions like SSNIT to strengthen preventive healthcare, improve access to early diagnosis, and support affordable treatment options across the country.

The SSNIT leadership expressed strong enthusiasm to collaborate with the Fund as long-term strategic partners. Mr. Biney revealed that discussions around such a partnership had already been on SSNIT’s radar even before the formal engagement, describing it as a reflection of the Trust’s dedication to national well-being and sustainable impact.

The collaboration between SSNIT and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund marks another milestone under MahamaCares, a vision championed by President John Dramani Mahama to build a more resilient, inclusive, and compassionate healthcare system for every Ghanaian.

The MahamaCares initiative seeks to ensure that every Ghanaian, regardless of background or income, has access to affordable and quality healthcare. It embodies President Mahama’s broader social vision of a nation where compassion drives governance, partnerships drive progress, and the well-being of citizens remains at the heart of national development.
