The State Housing Company Limited (SHCL) has announced plans to deliver 1,500 new housing units as part of a bold effort to address Ghana’s housing deficit, which currently stands at an estimated 1.8 million units.

This announcement was made during the commissioning of Seasons Court—a newly completed 9-unit apartment complex located in Adenta. The project is one of several legacy developments that SHCL has now completed.

Speaking at the commissioning, SHCL Managing Director Mr. John Bawah underscored the need for large-scale interventions in Ghana’s housing sector.

“We cannot continue building 100 or 200 homes at a time and expect to solve a 1.8 million-unit housing deficit. What we need is scale—projects in the thousands,” he said.

Mr. Bawah revealed that the 1,500-unit project will be developed in partnership with private sector players to improve efficiency and accelerate delivery.

He also gave assurances that this new initiative would not come at the cost of existing unfinished housing projects. SHCL, he said, remains committed to completing all ongoing developments, including those initiated prior to 2016.

“We are committed to finishing what was started. Our approach ensures that no project is abandoned and no taxpayer money is lost,” Mr. Bawah stated.

He credited President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership for instilling a policy of continuity in governance, especially in the housing sector.

“His Excellency President Mahama has made it clear that this government is focused on completing what others started. That principle guides our every step,” he said.

Mr. Bawah also linked the new housing drive to the government’s 24-hour economy policy, noting that shift workers and their families need access to secure and affordable homes that support their lifestyles.

“People who work late shifts or overnight need to know their families are in safe, secure homes. That’s our job in a 24-hour economy—making sure there’s quality, affordable housing for all,” he added.

The 1,500 new homes are expected to significantly ease the burden on the country’s housing stock and mark a pivotal step in SHCL’s nationwide development agenda.
