An exercise conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to remove foreign street beggars from city centres in Ghana has seen over 2,241 individuals repatriated to their home countries.
In May 2025, the GIS, in a special operation conducted in Ghana’s capital city, picked up over 2,000 foreign street beggars from various locations across Accra.
The operation, carried out on Friday, 16 May 2025, according to the GIS, led to the arrest of 384 male adults, 577 male children, 525 female adults, and 755 female children.
The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, made the disclosure when his ministry took its turn at the “Government Accountability Series” organised by the Government Communications wing on Monday, 14 July 2025.
The initiative, according to the Presidency Communications, forms part of efforts to deepen transparency and accountability in governance.
The Interior Minister stated that the exercise has helped restore public order in urban centres while supporting vulnerable populations through targeted interventions.
According to him, his ministry, through its agencies, is “mapping out strategies that will ensure the state eliminates all forms of street begging and other challenges on the streets of urban cities.”
