The Northern Regional Library in Tamale may be forced to close after a rainstorm ripped off parts of its roof.

On Tuesday, the region experienced strong winds accompanied by heavy rain that lasted for about three hours. The damage has put the library’s operations at serious risk unless urgent repairs are carried out.

Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Library Authority, Aaron Kuwornu, said the library’s continued functionality depends on immediate intervention.

Speaking exclusively to our Northern Regional Correspondent, Mr. Kuwornu said he had visited the Tamale Mayor and his team and was hopeful that support would be forthcoming.

He added that some library materials and equipment had already been relocated due to severe leakages.

Mr. Kuwornu stressed that in the worst situation, where the library is closed, indiscipline among young girls and boys will increase and academic performance will also be affected.

He appealed to the government and benevolent organisations to intervene swiftly.

“A society without a Library is a dead society. Library is the heartbeat of the community and seeing the number of children and patrons who visit the library, if it is closed down, users will idle around, so I pray that help will come fast,” he emphasised.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is yet to assess the situation.
