Police in Tema say they have intercepted more than 1,600 parcels of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following a coordinated intelligence-led operation, according to a statement issued by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs.

According to authorities, a total of 1,613 parcels were seized during an operation carried out along the Akosombo–Tema road, as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks in the region.

Police said the operation followed intelligence received on 10 January 2026, which suggested that large quantities of suspected narcotics were being transported from the Volta Region towards Tema. Officers subsequently mounted surveillance along the route, focusing on the Agomeda Junction area.

This was contained in a statement issued and signed by ASP Dede Dzakpasu Head of Public Affairs, Tema.

At around 12:45 a.m. on 11 January, police intercepted two vehicles — a white Toyota Highlander and a black Mitsubishi Pajero. The vehicles were being driven by two men, aged 33 and 39.

A search of the vehicles led to the discovery of several compressed parcels wrapped in yellow material, which police believe to be narcotic substances.

Both suspects were arrested at the scene and the vehicles were escorted to the police station for further investigation. On 12 January, the suspects and the seized items were handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Tema, where photographs and inventories were taken.

Police said 872 parcels were recovered from the Mitsubishi Pajero, while 741 parcels were found in the Toyota Highlander.

The suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations. Samples of the seized substances are expected to be sent to the Forensic Crime Laboratory for analysis, while searches are planned at the suspects’ residences. Police say preparations are underway to process the suspects for court.

The Tema Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to intensifying operations against drug trafficking and other criminal activities, and urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to support security efforts.
