Ghana’s transport sector may soon see increased use of digital technologies as government officials open discussions with ride-hailing company Yango on potential partnerships.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, emphasized that while technology integration will be encouraged, operational authority will remain firmly under the Ministry of Transport.

“We will ensure that any relevant technological conversation is well aligned, but the Transport Ministry will lead on operational matters,” Mr. George said during the meeting in Accra on Friday, August 15, 2025.

Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, welcomed the proposals but urged Yango to formally submit them for detailed consideration.

He pointed out that Ghana already has an electric vehicle policy and a roadmap for its rollout, stressing that any partnership must directly improve the country’s transport infrastructure and services.

Both ministers described the session as an introductory platform, with future engagements expected to focus on the practical review and integration of viable solutions.

The government delegation included Deputy Transport Minister, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Chief Director of the Transport Ministry Mrs. Mabel Asi Sagoe, and DVLA’s Acting Director of Research, Business and Innovation, Abraham Zata.

Yango was represented by its COO for MENA, Shashi Singh, Africa VP of Public Policy Zanyiwe Asare, Ghana Country Head Tom Ofonime, and Public Policy Consultant Mohammed Suhuyini Zakaria.

The talks signal government’s readiness to modernize the country’s road transport system through digital innovation, but also highlight a cautious approach that balances private-sector proposals with regulatory oversight and existing policy frameworks.

Observers say the coming discussions will test how well public-private partnerships can align with Ghana’s electric vehicle ambitions, regulatory realities, and the need for safer, smarter transport services.
