The National Chairman of the Local Government Service Workers Union of TUC, Engineer Moses Awenkanaab has expressed concern that workers in Bawku in the Upper East Region are not well protected at their various places of work. He said workers would not be able to increase productivity when the work environment is not safe.
Addressing workers on May Day at the Jubilee Park in Bolgatanga, Mr. Awenkanaab called on government to initiate measures towards protecting workers in the Bawku enclave.
“In relation to our colleagues who are within the working zone of Bawku enclave. We know the step the President has taken with Otumfuo team to mediate in this. We ant to use this opportunity to call on all and equally plead with our colleagues working in such environment to equally take the necessary steps to protect themselves. We want to create the awareness of our Regional Minister that there’s the need to protect our workers so that they can put up their best towards the development of this country” Mr. Awenkanaab appealed.

Various worker unions including the Ghana Highways Authority, the Ghana Water Limited, Consolidated Bank Ghana, the Nurses and Midwifes Association and Ghana National Association of Teachers were among others who turned up to commemorate the day.
They took to the streets of Bolgatanga amidst drumming and dancing drawing the public’s attention to the importance of the May Day in the worker’s life.

Reacting to the demand, the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri announced that appropriate measures have been put in place to protect workers living in Bawku and its surrounding areas. He assured workers of government’s commitment to making the working environment a safe place to work in.
“Let me reiterate that government in collaboration with the Security agencies has initiated measures to protect workers in Bawku. So I call on you not to desert the place because, when you leave the place we will risking the future of the youth and children in Bawku. We will make sure we provide you with the necessary security so that you can help the area” Minister assured.
