The wife of the late, Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, Mercy Amoah says she is still waiting and would continue to wait for her husband to return from his flight to Obuasi as he had promised her.
‘’You said you had a flight to Obuasi and you’ll be back, I’m still waiting, I don’t know for how long I will continue waiting, but I’ll still wait,’ she said while weeping.
Reading her tribute to her late husband Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensahon August 15, 2025 during the State funeral held for him alongside seven other gallant heroes who perished in the helicopter crash on their way to Obuasi, she shamed death, ‘’Shame on you, death! You have not won, Christ has’’ and revealed that putting words together for the tribute was the hardest task she had ever been given.
She revealed how her heart ached with the thought of not being able to see his smile again.
‘’You gave me the experience of being deeply understood, supported and loved’’, she added while also acknowledging his promise to give her a life that many would wish to have.
Mrs. Addo Mensah went on to admit that anyone who knew him knew he had ‘’exceptional humility, hard work, and pure dedication to service’’.
Speaking on the love he had for his work, she revealed that everyone knew the Z9 helicopter was like his best friend and in every conversation, he would always find ways to bring it up. ‘’You would spend long nights reading and researching on how to care for it’’.
Sergeant Ernest Addo’s widow recounted how she convinced him to allow them get married on his birthday, July 5, 2025 so that he would never forget their anniversary. She asked what she was to do with the memories they had. ‘’…what should I do with all these memories that’s so fresh in my heart and mind, though we were married for just a month’’.
According to her, his love for God was unmatched to the point that she even gave him the nickname, ‘Apostle’.
She revealed that he would often call her at five am to pray together and questioned why she was not receiving such calls from him anymore. “’you have not called us at five am for us to pray. On the morning of the Wednesday, I called you and told you that I woke up very sad. I did not know why. The first solution to everything, which was prayer, was what you suggested so we prayed but now the silence is too loud’’.
