The Adinkra Poetry Prize is excited to announce its 2025 call for poetry submissions, themed around the powerful Aya symbol, which represents endurance, resourcefulness, and triumph against all odds.
This year, two esteemed judges, Poetra Asantewa and Kweku Abimbola, both celebrated for their contributions to contemporary African poetry, will lend their expertise in leading generative workshops and selecting the winners.
Writers aged 18 and above who are Ghanaian citizens residing in Ghana or North America are encouraged to submit a single poem that thoughtfully engages with the Aya symbol, reflecting its cultural meaning. However, writers with a published full-length manuscript in any genre are not eligible to participate.
Prizes
• Winners from each region will receive $500 USD and the opportunity to be considered for a 4-week writers’ residency at the Watermill Center, USA.
• Two finalists will be awarded $100 USD each.
Finalists and winners will be announced in May 2025 and celebrated at an award ceremony. Additionally, selected submissions will be considered for inclusion in a digital anthology. The committee reserves the right to withhold awards based on the quality of submissions.
Workshops and Entry Details
For a minimal fee of 60 GHC, participants will gain free access to four workshops led by accomplished scholars and writers from both Ghana and the United States. These workshops, focusing on the history of Adinkra symbols and poetry crafting techniques, are designed to help writers refine their poems.
Participants are encouraged to submit work created or revised during the workshops for the competition.
