A political aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has dismissed claims that the former vice president and his wife were evacuated from Qatar, clarifying that the couple are currently in Saudi Arabia performing the Umrah.
Speaking on GTV Breakfast Show on Thursday, March 5, 2026, Mr. Tonto explained that Dr. Bawumia’s trip to the Middle East was a private journey intended for religious devotion and family time.

According to him, the former vice president travelled from Qatar to Saudi Arabia to perform the Umrah and remains there as scheduled.
“As I’m speaking to you, he is in Saudi Arabia performing the Umrah. The trip was planned, and it has not been interrupted in any way,” Mr. Tonto stated.
He explained that the narrative suggesting Dr. Bawumia required evacuation assistance was inaccurate, noting that the former vice president had already travelled to Saudi Arabia before such claims emerged.
Mr. Tonto further noted that as a former vice president, Dr. Bawumia is often extended diplomatic courtesies by Ghanaian missions abroad when he travels, particularly when an embassy or consulate is nearby.
“When he arrives in a place like Doha, the embassy may assist with courtesies such as facilitating immigration processes or offering support where necessary to maintain the dignity of the office he previously held,” he said.
He stressed that such assistance is routine and should not be interpreted as an emergency intervention.
The aide added that Dr. Bawumia’s Umrah is expected to continue until Saturday, after which he will proceed to his next destination.
While addressing the issue, Mr. Tonto also urged public attention to focus on the welfare of Ghanaians in parts of the Middle East who may be affected by regional instability.
“There are Ghanaians in places like Dubai and other locations who may require attention. Our main concern should be whether they are safe,” he said.
He concluded by reassuring the public that the former vice president and his wife are safe and that their travel plans remain unchanged.
