Ghana’s Black Queens have surged five places to 62nd in the latest FIFA women’s world rankings, reflecting their strong performances since August. Previously at 67th, the team now holds third position on the African continent, trailing only Nigeria and South Africa.
This rise underscores a revitalized form for the Ghanaian side under current leadership.
The Queens earned automatic qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a dominant 7-0 aggregate victory over Egypt in the qualifiers.
Their only setback in recent months was a friendly loss to fourth-ranked England earlier in December. These results highlight improved consistency and attacking prowess in international fixtures.
On the continental stage, Ghana’s third-place standing positions them as serious contenders behind the Super Falcons of Nigeria and Banyana Banyana of South Africa.
The rankings boost comes at a pivotal time, enhancing morale ahead of major tournaments. Coach Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo has credited team unity and tactical discipline for the upturn.
Looking ahead, the Black Queens will prioritize preparations for WAFCON, set for March 17 to April 3, 2026, in Morocco. The tournament offers a platform to challenge for the title and secure vital spots for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
National team officials plan intensive training camps and friendlies to build momentum.
This ranking improvement signals brighter prospects for women’s football in Ghana, inspiring young talents across the country.
Stakeholders urge sustained investment in infrastructure and youth development to maintain this trajectory. The Queens’ ascent reaffirms Ghana’s growing influence in African women’s soccer.
