The peaceful community of Ngama Gberuk in the Bunkpurugu district of the North East Region has been thrown into turmoil after violent clashes broke out between two local clans.
The conflict, involving the Nandouk Teeb and Maan Teeb clans, is reportedly linked to a dispute over chieftaincy titles. Trouble began when members of the two clans traveled to Binde, the seat of the Pibrana (the Paramount Chief), to participate in enskinment ceremonies—a traditional process of officially installing chiefs.
After the ceremonies, the newly enskinned chiefs were on their way back to Ngama Gberuk when unidentified gunmen ambushed them. Witnesses say the attackers opened fire, causing panic and leaving many people injured.
In the chaos, some were hurt by gunshots, while others sustained injuries as they fled for safety. To make matters worse, several houses, livestock, and personal belongings were set on fire, leaving families homeless and forcing many to seek shelter in nearby communities.
The violence has sparked fears of more clashes, as reports suggest retaliatory gunfire has already occurred in parts of the area. The situation remains tense, and residents are staying indoors out of fear for their safety.
Authorities are yet to provide further details, and the community is calling for urgent action to restore peace.
