The Bureau of Ghana Languages (BGL) has officially endorsed the Ahanta Language Orthography for use in educational institutions, marking a significant step towards the promotion and formalisation of the Ahanta language in Ghana’s education system.
In a letter dated January 15, 2026, and addressed to the Member of Parliament for the Ahanta West Constituency, the Bureau said the endorsement followed a thorough review of a paper submitted on the Ahanta Language Orthography. According to the Bureau, a three-member team was constituted to assess the work and achievements of the Ahanta Language Project Committee (ALPC), with particular focus on the implementation and usage of the developed orthography.
As part of the assessment, the team, together with the Basic Schools’ Coordinator of the Ahanta West Municipal Education Office and the Coordinator of the pilot Ahanta language teaching project, conducted field visits to selected schools participating in the pilot programme. The visits also involved interactions with teachers, learners, parents, traditional leaders, opinion leaders, church leaders and elders to verify the use and progress of the orthography.
The Bureau’s findings indicated that the Ahanta Language Orthography meets the required standards and that the pilot programme has produced positive results. It further noted strong enthusiasm among teachers, learners and parents for formal indigenous language learning, as well as keen interest from traditional leaders in expanding Ahanta language instruction across Ahanta land.
Based on these findings, the Bureau said it officially endorses the use of the Ahanta Language Orthography in schools within Ahanta land and for the development of learning materials. The endorsement, the Bureau noted, is a crucial step towards making the Ahanta language examinable at the Basic Education and Senior High School levels.
The Bureau of Ghana Languages also indicated its readiness to certify educational materials developed using the approved orthography for these purposes.
