President John Dramani Mahama has assured teachers nationwide that his administration will take firm action against anyone who assaults educators.
Speaking at the 54th Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) held on Monday, January 5, 2025, at the UPSA Auditorium in Accra, President Mahama expressed shock over the lack of formal disciplinary or legal action against the students.
President Mahama has thus pledged his unwavering support to teachers and promised that assaults on them would be dealt with decisively.
His statement follows a disturbing 2025 incident in which students at Kade Senior High School reportedly attacked a teacher after he refused to allow them to cheat in an exam.
The incident, which was widely shared online, prompted the parents of the students to reach an out-of-court settlement after a police report was filed.
“Indeed, I saw the video of the Maths teacher being beaten because he refused to allow our students to cheat, and they had a sense of entitlement. The unfortunate thing is that the matter went to the police station, and the parents of the students went to the police, and they said they settled the matter amicably.
How is that? This is assault. It is criminal. But when we inquired, the police also said the teacher was compensated, so he didn’t want to press charges anymore.
At least the children should have been booked; they should have been taken through the legal process, and at least, if nothing at all, they should have been bonded to be of good behavior for a period of time, and then we would believe that justice has been done.
But just for parents to come and pay a little compensation, it will encourage others to do the same. As for assaults on teachers, I am with you 100%. We will deal with it,” he stated.
