Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, says government will embark on a major education infrastructure upgrade next year, targeting 20 senior high schools across the country for improvement.
Speaking during a surprise visit to the Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC) in Accra on Monday, October 20, Mr Iddrisu said 10 Category C schools would be upgraded to Category B, and another 10 Category B schools raised to Category A.
He also revealed plans to select a “Special Ten” schools for priority investment, with PRESEC among them, to receive expanded classrooms, dormitories, and modern laboratories.
“My assessment here shows that classrooms are not adequate, dormitories are overcrowded, and laboratories are insufficient and not in good shape. Government will deliberately work from 2026 to change this,” he said.
The minister emphasised that improving infrastructure was key to sustaining the Free Senior High School policy and ensuring quality learning outcomes. “To manage the challenges in providing quality free SHS, we must make deliberate and sustainable investments in education,” he said.
The Tamale South MP praised the role of old students and the Presbyterian Church in supporting education, noting that PRESEC remained a shining example of partnership between the state and faith-based institutions.
He said the government’s goal was to give every Ghanaian child access to quality education in a conducive learning environment.
School authorities and parents thanked the minister for his visit and commitment to addressing the pressing challenges facing senior high schools.
