In a bold and historic step to uplift education in the birthplace of the late President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, the Member of Parliament for Ekumfi, Hon. Dr. Othniel Ekow Kwainoe has cut sod for a massive infrastructure transformation at J.E.A. Mills Senior High School in Ekumfi Otuam.

The landmark ceremony, held on Monday, brought together the Deputy Administrator of GETFund, Nananom, the consultant, contractors school authorities, opinion leaders, and enthusiastic community members all united in their resolve to ensure the late President’s legacy continues to shine through quality education.

Speaking at the event, the Hon. Kwainoe emphasized that the school established to immortalize Prof. Mills—must reflect the dignity, excellence, and hope he championed. He noted that the rapid decline in student numbers has called for some drastic action to be taken to salvage the situation hence the effort to assist by getting these facilities.

Thanks to strong lobbying by the Hon Dr. Kwainoe, GETFund has committed to fully finance the following projects:

  1. A Two-Storey, Fully Furnished Administrative Block
  2. A Two-Storey Library & Learning Resource Complex
  3. A Modern Male and Female Dormitory Facility
  4. A Three-Bedroom Headmaster’s Residence
  5. An Ultra Modern Spacious Dining Hall with a Fully Equipped Kitchen
  6. Two separate House Masters’ Residences

Once completed, these projects will drastically improve living and learning conditions deepening the school’s ability to nurture disciplined, talented, and globally competitive future leaders from Ekumfi and beyond.

Hon. Dr. Kwainoe extended profound gratitude to key national leaders whose commitment to education and support made this vision possible:

Our deepest thanks go to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic, and Her Excellency Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Vice President — our mother, for resetting the destiny of Atta Mills Senior High School through her continuous visionary leadership.

We are equally grateful to the Hon. Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, the Hon. Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and all who have supported this transformational agenda for Ekumfi.”

The Deputy GETFund Administrator praised the MP’s relentless advocacy, reaffirming GETFund’s commitment to supporting educational development across the country, especially in historically underserved communities.

Nananom expressed their gratitude, describing the initiative as a “true honour to the memory of Prof. Mills and a blessing to the children of Ekumfi.”

With construction already set to commence, a new chapter has begun for J.E.A. Mills SHS one that promises dignity, opportunity, and lasting progress for generations to come.

Ekumfi is rising. And education is leading the way.
