The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has told the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to stop buying items that are not essential. He has also asked ECG to change the way it buys things to avoid future problems with money and deliveries.
This decision comes after an investigation revealed that 2,637 containers meant for ECG were missing. These containers were left uncleared at the Tema Port for more than 60 days, causing huge delay fees and slowing down the company’s work.
According to the Ministry’s Head of Communications, Richmond Rockson, many of the containers were spread across different areas at the port, and ECG had failed to clear them in time.
Dr. Jinapor blamed the problem on the way ECG currently buys goods. He said ECG should not be the one clearing the goods from the port.
To fix the issue, the minister has directed that, from now on, all suppliers must clear and deliver the items themselves before handing them over to ECG.
“This way, we can avoid waste and make sure people are responsible for how public money is spent,” Mr. Rockson said.
