A Gynaecologist at Elimmas Health, Dr. Padi Ayertey, has disclosed that excessive growth of hair in women, called hirsutism, around the face, chest, and back may be caused by polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
According to him, PCOS is typically found among women and is a problem with hormones that happens during the reproductive years.
“It affects women’s ability to get pregnant, it affects their menstrual health because of excess bleeding, and it is also related to metabolic conditions they get subsequent in life. So if you have it earlier in life and we don’t deal with, later, on you are at great risk of becoming diabetic,” he explained.
He added that even though PCOS is a chronic, lifelong disease, it can be treated.
He also advised women to be measured in their intake of sugar.
