President John Dramani Mahama says the new float glass manufacturing factory being built at Shama in the Western Region will produce 1,400 tons of glass every day when it reaches full capacity.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony of the 250 million US dollar project Tuesday February 24, 2026, President Mahama said the factory will become one of the largest float glass production facilities in Africa when completed.
He explained that the project will be done in two phases. Phase One will produce 600 tons of glass per day, while Phase Two will add 800 tons daily, bringing total production to 1,400 tons each day.
The President said the factory will not only serve the local market but will also export glass to other African countries, Europe and other international destinations.
President Mahama noted that in 2024 alone, Ghana imported more than 65,000 tons of glass products valued at nearly 25 million dollars to meet demand in the construction, automobile and manufacturing sectors. He said the new factory will reduce imports, save foreign exchange and strengthen Ghana’s supply chain.
According to him, when the factory begins full production, export earnings are expected to reach about 100 million dollars annually.
President Mahama said the project forms part of government’s efforts to reposition Ghana as a serious destination for investment. He stated that the country has restored macroeconomic stability, revived investor confidence and improved its global economic standing.
He announced that Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product has now exceeded 100 billion dollars, reaching an estimated 113 billion dollars, making Ghana the second largest economy in West Africa. He added that inflation has dropped significantly from 23.5 percent in January 2025 to 3.8 percent in January 2026, while the economy expanded by 5.5 percent in the third quarter of 2025 — the strongest performance since 2020.
The President said the commissioning of Phase Five of the ceramic tile production line at Shama has also increased output to 200,000 square meters per day. He revealed that tiles produced in Shama are currently exported to more than 20 countries, including the United States, Italy, France, Mexico, Peru and Brazil.
President Mahama stressed that the expansion of the factories is a clear signal that Ghana is ready to move from an import-driven economy to a production and export-led economy.
He added that production strengthens the national currency and builds a strong economy, saying, “Production underpins the value of currency, not speculation.”
The President also disclosed that the company behind the project paid 740 million Ghana cedis in taxes in 2025 and is expected to pay more than 1 billion Ghana cedis annually when the float glass factory begins full production.
He said the tax revenue will support the development of schools, hospitals and roads across the country.
