The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has suspended all zonal inter-school sporting activities among Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) with immediate effect following violent incidents during the recently held District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru.
The directive was contained in a press statement issued by the Regional Director of Education, Dr. Juliette Dufie Otami, and sent to heads of second-cycle institutions.
“Management cited credible reports of serious disturbances during zonal athletics events.
It is therefore regrettable that a game of discipline, teamwork, mutual respect, and healthy rivalry among students has been undermined by acts of indiscipline and violence,” portions of the statement read.
The Regional Directorate said the suspension is aimed at safeguarding lives, maintaining order, and protecting the integrity of school sports.
The pause will allow authorities to conduct a thorough review, engage stakeholders, and develop preventive measures to avoid future incidents.
Heads of SHSs and SHTSs have been instructed to communicate the directive to staff and students and ensure full compliance.
Dr Dufie Otami emphasised that the suspension takes effect immediately and must be strictly observed.
Management assured schools of its commitment to restoring sporting activities under conditions that guarantee safety, discipline, and the true spirit of healthy competition.
