Team Ghana’s Phygital Basketball squad has safely returned home after making a strong impression at the prestigious Games of the Future 2025 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The Ghana Esports Federation (GESF) announced the athletes’ arrival on December 24, following the tournament that ran from December 14 to 24.
This global event, blending physical prowess with digital gaming, drew over 2,000 athletes from more than 100 countries, 300,000 on-site spectators, and millions of online viewers, cementing its status as the pinnacle of phygital sports.
Representing Ghana were four talented athletes—Thomas Kwame, Mintah Larry, Ketu Denis, and Ayivor Reuben—supported by officials Solomon Osei, Djimate Jeffery, and Gloria Peprah.
The team kicked off with a thrilling opener against Interstellar from the USA, clinching the digital stage 19-14 while drawing 25-26 in the physical stage for a confident start.
They showed grit against reigning champions Liga Pro of Russia, losing 14-19 digitally and 25-35 physically, before a final group clash with G-Unite of Montenegro ended 15-19 digitally and 9-14 physically.
Finishing third in their group and 10th overall out of 16 teams, Ghana marked a solid debut in this highly competitive field.
GESF praised the squad’s discipline and professionalism, noting the invaluable experience gained for future global battles.
The federation expressed deep gratitude to key partners, including title sponsor Afrimex Gold Limited, the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and the public, whose backing made this milestone possible.
This outing underscores Ghana’s rising profile in esports and phygital sports, with GESF pledging continued investment in athlete development, technology, and international readiness.
