Ghana Skate, the national governing body for all sports performed on skating wheels in Ghana, participates in the inaugural International Francophonie Skate Youth Championship, currently taking place in Cotonou, Benin.

This landmark championship brings together emerging skateboarding talents from across Francophone Africa and serves as a key preparatory event ahead of the Youth Olympic Games scheduled for Dakar later this year.

The Ghanaian delegation is led by Johnson Kwaku Gameli Kportufe, President of Ghana Skate, Prosper Ashiquaye Doku, the General Secretary of Ghana Skate, and Joshua Odamtten, Commission Chairman for Skateboarding in Ghana.

Representing the nation on the competitive front are two promising young athletes, Cornelius, A student of St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School, and Tracy, of Forces Basic School, who will proudly carry Ghana’s colors on the international stage.

The Francophonie Skate Youth Championship offers Ghanaian skaters a valuable platform to gain international exposure, enhance their competitive experience, and engage with peers and stakeholders within the global skateboarding community.

Participation in this event underscores Ghana Skate’s commitment to the development of roller sport in Ghana and across the African continent.

Beyond competition, the championship has also featured a capacity-building seminar for federation leaders, focused on strategies for sustainable sports development, modalities for securing funding, and country-to-country peer review systems aimed at strengthening governance and best practices among participating nations.

Ghana Skate’s leadership actively participated in these sessions as part of its long-term development agenda.

In addition, a coaching and officiating development programme was organized during the championship, providing specialized training and certification courses for commission heads, coaches, and technical officials.

The programme is designed to enhance technical expertise, standardize officiating practices, and improve coaching capacity to meet international skateboarding standards.

This marks a historic milestone for Ghana Skate and for skateboarding in Ghana,” stated Johnson Kwaku Gameli Kportufe, President of Ghana Skate.

We are immensely proud of Cornelius and Tracy for the efforts and hard work they have put into representing our country with their dedication to skateboarding.

Their participation is expected to inspire a new generation of young Ghanaians to embrace skateboarding and contribute to the sport’s continued growth.

Ghana Skate expresses its sincere appreciation to the National Sports Authority, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation,Legaci 101, and all other supporting stakeholders for their invaluable support and encouragement toward the advancement of roller sport in Ghana.
