Ghana’s latest Monthly Pension League Table for 2025, released by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), has revealed a stark inequality in retirement incomes across the country.
According to the report, the highest-paid pensioner received a monthly benefit of GH¢201,792.37 in January 2025, while the lowest-paid pensioner took home just GH¢514.41. This means the top earner’s pension was 392 times greater than that of the lowest recipient.
The data also highlights how different categories of pensioners benefited from the 2025 indexation adjustments. While those at the bottom of the scale enjoyed significant percentage increases, those at the top saw relatively modest gains.

The lowest-paid pensioner moved from GH¢409.10 in December 2024 to GH¢514.41 in January 2025, representing a 25.74% increase.
The highest-paid pensioner, however, rose from GH¢186,777.58 to GH¢201,792.37 over the same period, a smaller 8.04% increase.

The pension league table further shows that the top 10 highest earners draw monthly pensions ranging from GH¢58,031.91 to GH¢201,792.37, while the bottom 10 lowest earners receive between GH¢514.41 and GH¢669.54.
SSNIT officials explain that such disparities are largely a reflection of pre-retirement salaries and contributions made during a worker’s active years. Workers who contributed consistently on higher incomes accumulated larger retirement benefits compared to those with lower contributions.
The figures paint a clear picture of economic inequalities extending into retirement, raising fresh debates on pension reform and the sustainability of Ghana’s social protection system.

The middle to lower paid benefits should enjoy free hospital attendance at SSNIT hospitals. G
