The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Rev. Dr. Steven Wengam, has called on immigration officers nationwide to recommit to the highest standards of professionalism and to remain strictly non-partisan in the discharge of their duties.
He stressed that the Ghana Immigration Service is a national security institution not a political arena and urged personnel to prioritize unity, discipline, and integrity as core values of the Service.
Rev. Dr. Wengam delivered the message during a working tour of GIS operational centres in the Greater Accra and Tema Regions, where the Governing Council assessed operational processes, facility conditions, and staff challenges.
The Chairman said that although he had previously received briefings on the Service’s constraints, seeing the situation firsthand was “alarming” and underscored the urgent need for stronger support.
During the tour, the Council observed widespread structural and logistical limitations, including inadequate office space, congestion, and insufficient equipment factors officials say continue to undermine operational efficiency.
Rev. Dr. Wengam praised officers for their dedication despite these challenges and assured them that the Council is actively engaging government and corporate Ghana to secure improved infrastructure, equipment, and welfare packages.
Strengthening the Service, he emphasized, is essential for effective border management and national security.
At the Tema Regional Command, Comptroller-General Mr. Samuel Basintale Amadu briefed the Council on the construction of a new five-storey office complex expected to ease administrative pressure on the GIS Headquarters.
The facility, once completed, will enhance deployment, streamline operations, and improve service delivery across the region.
The working tour forms part of broader efforts by the GIS Governing Council to advocate for better resourcing and to enhance the operational capacity of immigration officers across the country.
