The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called for strengthened public-private partnerships (PPPs) to achieve sustainable healthcare delivery in Ghana.
This appeal was made during the 67th Annual General Conference of the GMA, held in Cape Coast, Ghana, from November 10-16, 2025.
The week-long conference, which has ended, was on the theme: “Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships for Sustainable Healthcare Delivery.”
The conference featured scientific sessions where experts discussed various topics related to public-private partnerships, including training, capital investment, healthcare tourism, and quality of care.
The Chairman of the organizing committee,Dr Emmanuel Owusu Ofori,in his address thanked the members for the trust for choosing cape coast as the center to host the 2025 GMA Conference.
Dr Ofori said cape coast will continue to be historic and maintain it rich cultural heritage for Ghana and beyond. Dr Ofori believe the association has really enjoyed their stay and hope to consider cape coast for future events.
The Minister for Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, emphasized the need for PPPs to improve healthcare delivery, highlighting the government’s commitment to deepening these partnerships.
Challenges with Electronic Medical Records System:The GMA noted recent challenges with the Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS), citing disruptions in continuity of care and data security concerns.
The GMA condemned illegal small-scale mining (Galamsey) as a threat to lives and the environment, calling for sustained efforts to address the issue.
Conditions of Service:
The GMA urged the government to resolve outstanding issues related to medical doctors’ and dentists’ conditions of service.
Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister for Health Emphasized the need for PPPs to improve healthcare delivery and announced plans to open up selected uncompleted health facilities for PPP agreements.
Dr. Frank Serebour, Outgoing President of GMA ,Highlighted success stories and challenges faced by the association, emphasizing the need for collective action to address issues like road traffic accidents and environmental degradation.
Prof. Dr. Richard Adanu, Rector, Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons,Urged the association to be focused and fit for the profession.
New Leadership:
The GMA elected new members of the National Executive Committee, including Prof. Dr. (Med) Ernest Yorke as President and Dr. (Dent) Richard Selormey as General Secretary.
The GMA issued a communiqué calling for strengthened governance and accountability frameworks for PPPs, expedited rollout of Ghana Health Information Management System (GHIMS), and resolution of outstanding issues related to medical doctors’ and dentists’ conditions of service.
The GMA also used the occasions to award outstanding members for their contributions to the Association and the healthcare sector.
