Officials from the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) are holding urgent talks with management of the Tamale Central Hospital over deteriorating sanitation conditions at the facility.

The meeting, currently being held behind closed doors, follows growing concerns about hygiene at the hospital, with reports of unclean wards and washrooms raising alarm among patients and health workers.

HeFRA says it has deployed a team to assess the situation and engage hospital authorities as part of efforts to address the crisis.

The agency’s Acting Registrar, Winfred Korletey Baah, confirmed the intervention, stating that a formal decision will be announced after the assessment.

“We understand that management is working on it. We are also assessing the situation, and very soon we will come out with a decision on Tamale Central Hospital,” he said.

He added that the focus is to ensure patient safety and help the facility improve the quality of care it delivers.

The sanitation challenges come amid an ongoing sit-down strike by some casual staff over five months of unpaid salaries.

The industrial action has significantly affected cleaning services, leaving parts of the hospital in poor condition.

The striking workers say they will not return to work until their outstanding salaries are paid in full, deepening concerns about hygiene and patient safety at one of the region’s key referral facilities.
