The Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Rashid Tanko, says the Supreme Court’s decision to stay the Kpandai parliamentary rerun has given the party additional time to strengthen its campaign against the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on GTV’s Current Agenda, on Saturday, December 20, 2025, Dr Tanko described the 13 days granted by the court as an opportunity for the NDC to intensify its campaign efforts and consolidate support in the constituency.
According to him, the original timeline ahead of the December 30 election was restrictive, but the Supreme Court’s intervention has created room for improved strategy and mobilisation. “Why should we be unhappy? The Supreme Court has given us more time to do more campaigning, widen the gap, and deliver a decisive defeat to the NPP in Kpandai,” he said.
Dr Tanko accused the NPP of attempting to use the courts to overturn what he described as a clear electoral loss, insisting the party was aware of its defeat in the constituency. He argued that the NPP’s actions at the Tamale High Court suggested prior knowledge of the outcome, noting that the party arrived with both an appeal and a motion to stay execution already prepared.
He further alleged that the NPP and the Electoral Commission were relying on procedural technicalities at the Supreme Court rather than addressing substantive issues identified by the High Court. Dr Tanko said the NDC would resist any attempt to use legal processes to undermine the will of the people of Kpandai, stressing that the party remains focused on the pending election.
The comments were made during a panel discussion hosted by Kojo Van Ess, as part of broader analysis of the Supreme Court’s stay of the Kpandai rerun and its implications for Ghana’s democratic process.
