President John Dramani Mahama has been installed as Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source by the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.

‎The colourful ceremony was held in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, and attracted traditional rulers, chiefs, dignitaries, and members of the Yoruba community.

‎The prestigious Yoruba chieftaincy title means “a president who reorganises the global space for humanity.” It was given to President Mahama in recognition of his leadership, commitment to global cooperation, fairness, and sustainable development.

‎The installation followed several days of preparations at the Ooni’s palace, including traditional rites and cultural ceremonies. The palace grounds were filled with rich cultural displays and decorations as people gathered to witness the historic event.

‎President Mahama is well known for his support for multilateral cooperation and a fair global system. In his international engagements, including speeches at the United Nations, he has consistently called for collective action on global issues such as climate change and economic inequality. He has also pushed for a stronger voice for developing countries in global decision-making.

‎This honour adds to President Mahama’s previous traditional titles in the Yoruba land. In October 2015, he was named Aare Atolase of Offa by the Offa Kingdom in Kwara State, in recognition of his leadership and diplomatic efforts.

‎The latest honour is expected to strengthen cultural and diplomatic relations between Ghana and Nigeria, reflecting the strong historical and cultural ties between the two countries.

‎The Ooni of Ife, one of the most respected traditional rulers among the Yoruba people, continues to play an important role in promoting Yoruba culture, peace, and socio-economic development across Nigeria and the African diaspora.
