President for the Paediatric Society of Ghana and a Paediatrician at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Hilda Mantebea Boye and Medical officer, Dr. Micheal Rockson Adjei are urging parents to rally behind Ghana’s nationwide rollout of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, launched to protect girls aged 9 to 14 from cervical cancer.
“The key concern has been the myth about the vaccine that it sterilizes girls and makes them promiscuous which is not true .The vaccine has never been used in Ghana “Dr Micheal Rockson Adjei stated.
Speaking on ‘GTV Breakfast Show’ on Monday September 8, 2025, the Medical Professionals highlighted Ghana’s nationwide rollout of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. The initiative aims to raise awareness ahead of the campaign which targets girls aged 9 to 14 years, offering them the vaccine free of charge as part of Ghana’s routine immunization schedule.

Dr. Hilda Mantebea Boye indicated that HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer, and remains one of the most common cancers among women in Ghana.
She emphasized the importance of early vaccination, noting that it offers strong protection before exposure to the virus and significantly reduces future risk
“Prevention is what we emphasize, because by the time you see these symptoms and signs it may have already spread “ she said .
She assured Ghanaians that the vaccine has gone thorugh extensive testing to ensure it is efficacious and authorities would not risk the future of the people by providing something that is not safe.

For his part, Dr. Micheal Rockson Adjei said the free HPV vaccine initiative forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health threat. He emphasized that the vaccine is safe, effective, and has been successfully rolled out in many countries. He also encouraged parents to support the campaign by ensuring that their daughters get vaccinated.
The segment further highlighted the partnership between the Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization in delivering the vaccines nationwide.
Both doctors urged the public to embrace the programme, noting that widespread participation will save lives and secure better health outcomes for generations of Ghanaian women.
