The Ministry of Health has obtained financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance for the payment of allowances and salaries to a total of 14,916 healthcare professionals, including rotation nurses, midwives, as well as medical and dental house officers across the country.
A press release issued by the Ministry on 13th March 2026 and signed by its spokesperson, Tony Goodman, said the clearance covers 14,279 rotation nurses and midwives and 637 medical and dental house officers.
The approval is aimed at ensuring that newly trained health professionals receive the necessary financial support as they undertake their mandatory service and professional training.
The statement explained that the clearance for nurses extends across major cadres such as Registered General Nurses, Registered Midwives, Registered Mental Health Nurses, Registered Community Health Nurses, and Registered Public Health Nurses. These professionals began their rotations last year and are expected to complete them within 2026.
Additionally, clearance has been granted for the payment of salaries to 637 Medical and Dental House Officers who completed their training from both public and private medical institutions and were inducted into service in November 2025 after successfully passing the Medical and Dental Council examinations.
The Ministry emphasized that these approvals will not only clear all outstanding arrears from previous years but will also pave the way for a new policy direction, monthly payment of allowances for health professionals undertaking mandatory service. This marks a shift from the previous practice of lump-sum payments at the end of service periods.
According to the Ministry, the initiative aligns with efforts to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare delivery system by ensuring that health personnel, including nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals, are adequately motivated and supported.
Mr. Goodman assured that the Ministry will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Finance and other relevant stakeholders to sustain support for healthcare workers and maintain quality service delivery nationwide.
