Jannik Sinner has booked a place in the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters after a hard-fought win over Tomas Machac, despite seeing his remarkable winning streak come to an end.
The Italian star defeated Machac in three sets in their Round of 16 clash on Thursday. However, the match also marked the end of Sinner’s impressive run of 37 consecutive sets won at ATP Masters 1000 events.
Machac, from the Czech Republic, fought back strongly in the second set, winning a tie-break to stop Sinner’s record-breaking streak. Sinner had earlier surpassed Novak Djokovic’s previous record of 24 straight sets.
Despite the setback, Sinner regained control in the final set, winning 6-3 to secure victory and continue his campaign.
The world number two has been in outstanding form in recent months, winning titles in Paris, Indian Wells, and the Miami Open without dropping a set.
Sinner will now face sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals as he chases his first ATP Masters 1000 title on clay.
At the same time, the Italian is also in contention to reclaim the world number one ranking from rival Carlos Alcaraz, who is also in action at the tournament.
The Monte Carlo Masters remains a key event in the clay-court season, with top players battling for form ahead of major tournaments later in the year.
