In a major move to combat poverty and enhance livelihoods, the Member of Parliament for Nabdam Constituency in the Upper East Region, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, has empowered some women through a comprehensive skills training program. The initiative, aimed at promoting self-sufficiency among women in the constituency, culminated in the presentation of a GHS 20,000 start-up fund to support their entrepreneurial ventures.
The beneficiaries, drawn from various communities in Nabdam, received training in income-generating activities such as soap making, shea butter processing, dawadawa, groundnut paste, kulikuli, etc. The training, which lasted for three weeks, was organized in collaboration with the NDC’s women organizer, Madam Leticia Yamga. Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Dr. Nawaane emphasized the importance of empowering women as a sustainable approach to poverty reduction.

“Women are the backbone of our communities. When they are equipped with skills and supported financially, they not only transform their lives but also uplift their families and society as a whole,” he stated.
The MP further revealed that the GHS 20,000 fund would be disbursed in small grants to enable each of the 55 women to start their own businesses. He assured continuous monitoring and mentorship to ensure the sustainability of their businesses.
“When you empower a woman, you empower a family and a community. This support is not just financial; it’s about restoring dignity, building self-reliance, and creating lasting change.” he said.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the opportunity, pledging to put the skills and funds to productive use.
“This is a life-changing opportunity. I am a disease control officer but I am unemployed. I now have the confidence and resources to start my own business and support my family,” said Nangod Clemencia, one of the trainees.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the MP to tackle unemployment, especially among women and youth, and promote inclusive development in the Nabdam Constituency.
