The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Squad (NAIMOS) has stopped the destruction of cocoa farms by illegal miners at Adanse Anomabo in the Bosome Freho District of the Ashanti Region.
In an update on Monday, 8 December, the taskforce said it carried out an intelligence-led operation after receiving petitions from the local cocoa farmers association, who complained about the invasion of their farms by galamsey operators.
The report revealed that when the team reached the mining area, known as Kakra site, the miners fled, leaving behind heavy machinery and tools. The taskforce reported that the farms had suffered massive damage, leaving several farmers frustrated and distressed.
During the operation, six excavators found on the site were immobilised to stop their further use. A pump action gun and seven cartridges were also retrieved.
The task force also stated that makeshift shelters used by the illegal miners were demolished and burnt, together with pipes and other equipment used for mining.
