President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has paid a heartfelt visit to the family of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, to offer his condolences and commemorate her impactful life.
The visit was marked by reflections on her unparalleled contributions to women’s empowerment in Ghana, a cause she championed throughout her tenure.
During his visit, President Mahama highlighted Nana Konadu’s unique position as the longest-serving First Lady in Ghanaian history, holding the role for 19 consecutive years, a record unlikely to be surpassed under the current constitutional framework, which limits presidents to a maximum of two terms, or eight years.
He emphasized that her extended influence allowed her to make deep, lasting impacts across the nation.
Mahama recalled her dedicated focus on women’s empowerment, pointing to the work of the 31st Divisional Women’s Movement during her years in office.
“Even up to today, when you go around the country on the campaign trail, you see evidence of her work,” he said, highlighting projects in oil palm extraction and dairy production that remain operational and continue to benefit women and their families across Ghana.
The President praised these income-generating initiatives, noting how they have helped many women improve their livelihoods and provide better futures for their children.
“There’s a lot that can be said,” he affirmed, recognizing Nana Konadu Rawlings not only as an influential first lady but as a relentless advocate for female economic independence.
Concluding his tribute, President Mahama expressed confidence that when full tributes are written, a comprehensive story of her role and remarkable achievements would emerge, cementing her place in Ghana’s history as a transformative figure in championing women’s rights and empowerment.
