Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, and former Minister for Information, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has identified four critical issues that contributed to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show, Mr Oppong Nkrumah highlighted governance policy choices especially economic management, poor party corporate governance, discipline and operational inefficiencies and a feeling of exclusion among some party members from decision-making as the main causes of the defeat.

“The four major issues that led to our loss in 2024 comprised policy or governance policy decisions, particularly on the economy. So a lot of people were of the view that our responses to the economic challenges were not robust enough.”; Oppong Nkrumah explained.

Beyond economic affairs, he pointed to internal party problems. “We also had corporate governance, party corporate governance and discipline issues, if corporate governance becomes weak, your ability to fulfil your mission and your vision becomes challenging”; he remarked.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah further noted the human factor behind the loss, stating, “A good number of people felt that they were not part of the decision-making of the party. They didn’t necessarily disagree with the decision, but they didn’t feel involved.” He described the ensuing reforms as a direct response to these four challenges, aimed at strengthening unity and organizational efficiency.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah further added that, an internal review committee chaired by former Speaker Prof. Mike Oquaye had previously examined these issues but the party has opted not to publish the full report, citing sensitive contents. However, he reassured that a summary of findings has been released and efforts to enact reforms are underway to prevent a recurrence of the 2024 defeat in future elections.
