Ghanaian Actor, Director, Philanthropist, and Producer, Mr. Oscar Provencal best known for his role as Inspector Bediako in the TV series ‘Inspector Bediako’ has expressed shame and disappointment over Ghana’s reliance on imported tomatoes, stating that it’s a disgrace and would make former President, Kwame Nkrumah turn in his grave.

He urged Ghanaians on the GTV breakfast show, to take action and improve local food production.

“We have become a laughing stock to the world over basic food production. We must feel ashamed as Ghanaians that we still depend on others for Tomatoes.
This situation would make Kwame Nkrumah turn in his grave. Importing tomatoes after so many years of independence Is a disgrace”, he noted.

The situation highlights Ghana’s vulnerability in food security, with about 90% of fresh tomatoes consumed in Ghana imported from Burkina Faso.
Ghana is currently negotiating with Burkina Faso to lift the ban on tomato exports, which has been in effect since March 16, 2026. The ban, imposed to protect Burkina Faso’s domestic processing industry, has sparked concerns about food security and prices in Ghana.

The Ghanaian government, through the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, is engaging with Burkinabe authorities to find a mutually beneficial solution.
