Some Ghana Police officers deployed to the Bawku area are threatening to resign if they are not transferred from the area, according to the Minister of Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka.

He stated that the reasoning for this decision stems from fear of death or injury since several personnel including those stationed have been shot and killed in the last three months amidst the ongoing clash

Addressing parliament on Tuesday February 11, 2026 Muntaka appealed to Members of Parliament from affected communities to help create a safer and more convenient environment for security personnel to carry out their duties.

“I have had instances where some officers say that if you don’t transfer me from that area, I will rather resign. Why? Because the citizens themselves over there are not helpful. To the extent that people have the courage to go and openly fire at police officers and kill them…at the checkpoints. At a point in time, the IGP had to withdraw all police officers from checkpoints.

“I had to insist that the answer is not to withdraw but rather position them with armored vehicles. As MPs, we need to work with these security people so that we will be able to create an enabling environment within the area so they can assist and help us,” he said.

The minister also indicated that this was a matter of urgency and must be resolved as soon as possible.

Several incidents of violence have occurred in the enclave over the past few months causing fear and panic to residents. The President gave an assurance of peace and safety while commissioning Phase One of a 2000-unit military barracks and a new fleet of vehicles for the Ghana Armed Forces at the West African Soldiers Social Activities (WASSA) 2025.
