Voting officially commenced around 7:00GMT across some 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency in the Greater Accra region, which are under dispute.
Due to some unpalatable incidents that marred the outcome of the 2024 parliamentary election in Ablekuma North Constituency, the Ghana Police Service has, this time around put in extra measures to ensure incident free voting, counting and declaration of results at the end of polls in 19 polling stations.
To this end, police officers deployed to ensure security at the ongoing parliamentary election re-run stationed at the Awoshie DVLA polling centre, one of the 19 polling stations under contention in the Ablekuma North Constituency during the early hours of the polls, arrested several individuals dressed in brown uniforms and posing as security personnel.
According to the police, the arrested individuals were unable to properly identify themselves with any of the state security agencies when questioned and were subsequently taken to the Odorkor Police Station for further interrogation.
The suspects were found stationed near the entrance of the polling center. Their inability to provide valid identification raised suspicions among the general public.
Investigations are currently underway to determine the identities and intent of the suspects.
Registered constituents in the 19 polling stations return to the ballot box in a highly anticipated parliamentary rerun aimed at resolving a months-long electoral dispute.
Over 6,000 registered voters are expected to participate in today’s exercise, which follows the fallout from the December 7, 2024, general elections.
The constituency has remained without representation in the 9th Parliament after irregularities and missing pink sheets in select polling stations cast doubt on the validity of the original results.
