The former NPP Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has laid the blame for Ghana’s economic woes during the last NPP government at the doorstep of Ken Ofori-Atta. Adwoa Safo was speaking to NPP delegates, urging them to support Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s bid to become flagbearer.
In an apparent pushback against claims that Dr. Bawumia is partly to blame for the economic mismanagement which contributed to the NPP’s heavy defeat in the last election, Adwoa Safo explained that Dr. Bawumia did not have a free hand to operate.
According to her: “Was Dr. Bawumia the Finance Minister? Were we not in government when some NPP MPs asked that their own NPP Finance Minister be changed because of the way our economy is being mismanaged? Did we? Didn’t he cause complete damage before he was changed? So how can we blame this on Bawumia?”
Adwoa Safo’s open declaration of her support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, and not Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, to become the NPP flagbearer in the 2028 general election baffled some NPP delegates.
Sarah Adwoa Safo explained her support for Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, rather than Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, with whom she has two children, is an apparent strategy to further her own political career. She explained that one of the reasons the NPP lost power is the perception of a family-and-friends government. So she didn’t think Kennedy Agyapong becoming President would earn her a place in his government.
“For someone I have two children with, to consider appointing me as a minister would seem impossible.”
The NPP is to elect a presidential candidate for the 2028 general election in January 2026. Other aspirants in the race for flagbearer include the former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong. Dr. Bawumia is considered the front runner in some polls.
